A Bit of History
KCAL-TV Channel is a Los Angeles TV station that is owned by CBS. It shares its studio with KCBS-TV Channel 2 in the Studio City portion of the city. The station has had a long history in Los Angeles with its first on-air broadcast occurring in 1948. At that time, it went by the call letters of KFI-TV, and was affiliated with NBC. However, it broke away in 1949 when NBC established its own station, now known as KNBC. KCAL-TV has operated independently since that time.
KCAL in the 90s
During a good part of the 90s, KCAL extensively ran cartoons and children’s programming. Reality shows, court TV, and news magazines were added to the line-up during that decade as well. Also, Young Broadcasting purchased KCAL in 1996. By 2000, the children’s shows had been discontinued. Newscasts were scheduled during the earlier afternoon hours and the evening newscast at 6:30 p.m. was canceled.
Popular Programming
Changes have since continued as Young Broadcasting sold KCAL to CBS in 2002. As a result KCAL joined KCBS-TV and moved from its Paramount Studios’ address on Melrose Avenue up a ways to CBS Columbia Square. KCAL, though, still remained independent after the sale.
